PRESS RELEASE: Farmington police urge businesses to watch for counterfeit money

Farmington, NM – The Farmington Police Department is urging businesses to be vigilant following reports of counterfeit money circulating in the community. While businesses tend to be mindful of large bills, counterfeiters have now started manufacturing smaller denominations knowing they are easier to pass. Businesses should take precautions to help reduce their chances of falling victim to this crime. The United States Federal Reserve provides information on how to determine if a note is genuine. They emphasize that unique security and design features should be used rather than detection pens which aren’t always accurate and can give false results. Specifications for each of the seven denominations can be found online at www.uscurrency.gov/denominations.

If you suspect you’ve received a counterfeit note, please call 334-6622 and request to speak with an officer.
