Athletes from around the state will compete in various sports to include golf, softball and aquatics. First Responders throughout San Juan County will be assisting with this weekend’s games.

This year’s invitational will kick off on Friday at 8:00 a.m. with the state golf tournament. Athletes will play on one of three courses: Pinon Hills in Farmington, Aztec Municipal Golf Course or Riverview in Kirtland. Opening ceremonies will begin that evening at 6:00 at McGee Park. Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe is encouraging the community to come out and show their support for the athletes. “Special Olympics provides children and adults with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to participate in a variety of Olympic-type sports,” he explained. “Our community has been given the honor of hosting this event year after year. We are asking you to come out and make this event a memorable and exciting experience for these dedicated athletes.”
