PRESS RELEASE: Standoff with armed subject ends peacefully, no injuries

Yesterday at approximately 2:30 p.m. Farmington police responded to the Roadway Inn on Broadway in reference to an armed robbery. Officers arrived and learned that the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old David Reimers, had sexually assaulted a female and took her luggage. The victim was able to provide a photo of the suspect on her phone to police. At approximately 1:33 a.m. today, police stopped a truck occupied by Reimers and two other individuals in the area of McKinsey and McCarty Avenue. Two of the individuals exited the truck at which time Reimers moved into the driver’s seat and attempted to leave the area. Officers were able to stop him from leaving, however, Reimer’s displayed a firearm and threatened to harm himself. Officers established a perimeter and SWAT was dispatched to the area. San Juan County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team negotiators were also dispatched and worked to resolve the situation without harm to the suspect, officers or nearby residents. At approximately 9:30 a.m. Reimers surrendered after an eight-hour standoff and was taken into custody. He will be booked and charged on a warrant issued earlier on charges of robbery and sexual assault, in addition to charges associated with the standoff. The warrant carries $150,000 bond.
